BEST PLACES FOR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS IN HOUSTON | A BLOG SERIES
1ST INSTALLMENT | THEATER DISTRICT
For a long time I have been looking to compile a list of the best places for engagement photos in Houston, Texas. Today I’m adding the first installment to that list with one of the most beautiful places in downtown Houston, the Theater District. This post will specifically cover the area around the Wortham Center. The Wortham Center is a large theater on the Buffalo Bayou in the northeast edge of downtown Houston. It sits right on the edge of the beautiful Houston Theater District. The Wortham Center is a quite popular place for photos of all types, and it’s not uncommon to see multiple photographers lined up with their subjects waiting to take shots at the Wortham Falls beside the theater.
For my Best Places for Engagement Photos in Houston series, I will be rating each location based on a number of factors: Aesthetics, Location, Uniqueness, Comfort, and Diversity are the factors we will be looking at for each area. So let’s get right into it….
Aesthetics – 4 out of 5 – Personally, I usually enjoy taking engagement photos in more natural settings, but it’s nice to switch it up sometimes. An urban area has a feeling of fun and power that you just can’t get in a natural setting, and as far as urban settings go, it doesn’t get much better than the theater district. In fact, the Theater District has a healthy mix of both natural and urban looks. It’s clean, there is a lot to do / look at, and plenty to make great memories. The reason I dropped it one point to a 4 is because all urban areas are prone to some trash and other unmentionables lying around, and this is no different. However, with a skilled photographer your memories will contain only beauty.
Location – 4 out of 5 – The Theater District is a very central location easily accessed on the edge of downtown Houston. I did take one point off of the total due to the fact that finding parking can be quite difficult. I would recommend carpooling with your photographer, as it is much easier to find one open spot than two.
Uniqueness – 3 out of 5 – The Theater District is awesome. It’s beautiful, has plenty of different looks, and a ton of scenery that looks great in photos. For this reason it’s also not too unique. Many people take all types of photos here. It’s not uncommon to go by Wortham Falls on any night of the week and see engagement, bridal, or other types of photos going on. I gave it a 3 out of 5 due to the fact that if you’re not from Houston, there are chances for very unique shots that you won’t easily get other places. But if you’ve lived in Houston for an extended period of time, or have friends who got married in Houston, chances are some of their photos took place in the Theater District. This speaks very highly to how amazing a location it is, but does not make it very unique to Houston photographs.
Comfort – 4 out of 5 – When you’re out taking professional pictures, people tend to stare. And why wouldn’t they? You’re all dressed up, looking amazing, and there is someone following you around with a large camera, lights, directing to you, and pointing out what you should be doing. But not all couples like people staring at them. In fact, some people get REALLY uncomfortable about it and it can really get them out of the proper mood. Well, if you’re the type of couple that does not like people staring while you’re taking pictures, the Theater District is for you. While it is located on a few busy streets, there are plenty of places to take pictures far away from the general public.
Diversity – 4.5 out of 5 – The Theater District is very diverse. There is Wortham Falls, the Buffalo Bayou, and many different downtown looks all within a few hundred yards of each other. You could spend hours in the Theater District, and get plenty of different looks. Make sure you bring multiple outfits to your engagement session to complement all the scenery.
Overall – 3.9 out of 5 – Overall, the Theater District in downtown Houston is one of the best places to take engagement photos. It’s got a great diversity of scenery, is very aesthetically pleasing for an urban area, and is a very comfortable location for couples. It’s easy to get to, but the parking can be somewhat frustrating if you come during the evening or on a weekend. If you decide to choose the Theater District for your engagement photos, you will not be disappointed. Stay tuned for the next article in our Best Places for Engagement Photos in Houston series.
